HUM 251 History of Middle Earth - 3 Hours
An intellectual history of the development of J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings. Themes include the continuity between the works, the historical contexts of the development of the novels, contrasts between the author's early plot lines and the final narratives. HUM 301 Exploring Europe: Arts and Culture I - 3 Hours
A survey of the arts, religious faiths, and ideas of the western tradition from ancient times to the present while traveling in Europe. These classes will involve extensive field work in museums, art galleries, cathedrals, and diverse historical sites. They will emphasize thoughtful consideration of Christian and cultural concerns through preparatory readings, lectures, discussion, and writing.

HUM 499 Humanities Capstone - 3 Hours
An interdisciplinary seminar involving juniors and seniors from all three departments in the Humanities division: English, History, and Philosophy. The course consolidates students? academic skills by preparing them to make the transition from undergraduate studies to future academic and vocational opportunities. As part of this process, students will produce a CV and major paper in their field, sharing their progress with the rest of the class. One-third of the course is devoted to gaining professional experience. Offered spring semester of odd-numbered years. Prerequisite: junior or senior status, or permission of the instructor.
