Humanities
Humanities are academic disciplines that study aspects of human society and culture. The humanities include the areas of English, history, music, and philosophy. Students study the humanities prior to pursuing graduate programs in one of the areas of the humanities or a careers in creative writing, government, law, library work, research, or theology.
HUM 200 The Western Heritage I: From Antiquity to the Reformation - 3 Hours

A survey of the major thinkers, ideas, and events that produced the heritage of the West: Modern Europe, the "Post-Modern" West, and the rise of Anglo-American thought and tradition. HUM 251 History of Middle Earth - 3 Hours
An intellectual history of the development of J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings. Themes include the continuity between the works, the historical contexts of the development of the novels, contrasts between the author's early plot lines and the final narratives. HUM 301 Exploring Europe: Arts and Culture I - 3 Hours
A survey of the arts, religious faiths, and ideas of the Western tradition from ancient times to the present while traveling in Europe. These classes will involve extensive field work in museums, art galleries, cathedrals, and diverse historical sites. They will emphasize thoughtful consideration of Christian and cultural concerns through preparatory readings, lectures, discussions, and writing. Offered Spring semester and May Term in even-numbered years for Deerfield traditional undergraduate. Prerequisite: Junior status or consent of instructor.
